The Picks:
Animal Land volume 1 – Kodansha makes its debut into the world of all ages manga in the US. In a world where animals rule and the strong eat the weak, Monoko of the tanuki pack stumbles across a strange creature he has never seen before—a human baby! It has no claws or teeth to protect itself with, but it does have the rare ability to speak and understand all the different animals. Monoko teams up with the baby to protect his pack from the vicious wildcats. This new series from newcomer Kodansha will appeal to young kids with its fantastic elements and potty humor. This could be a good series to get reluctant boy readers hooked on.
Garfield & Co. Volume 3: Catzilla—Garfield returns with new stories and a new look! It’s Halloween, and Garfield is ready for trick or treating. He’s dressed up as the fierce wild cat, Catzilla. But what he doesn’t know is that the real Catzilla has escaped from the zoo, and the police are searching for him. A case of mistaken identity leads Garfield on a wild chase, while Jon and Odie have a monster of a cat to deal with. Also featured in this volume are the stories “Underwater World” and “Perfect Pizza.” This series is based on a CGI cartoon that airs on Cartoon Network and takes the story and screen shots from it. Younger readers and fans of Garfield will enjoy the fat cat’s antics.
