It’s a little of this, and a little of that as publishers release titles just in time for summer vacation, and parents are in need of distraction for their kids getting out of school. Bongo Comics has a new Summer Shindig with the Simpsons. DC Comics has a new trade of the popular Batman: The Brave and the Bold. Kids Can Press has the next Binky volume, while Little Brown releases the next Tintin title. And video games lovers will want to check out Udon Entertainment’s next Mega Man collection, Gigamix.

The Picks:

Ducktales #1 – The most popular Disney Afternoon TV show returns with an all-new, original ongoing comic book series. Duck Tales was the longest running show on the Disney Afternoon, and featured Scrooge McDuck and nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie as they traveled the world searching for treasure, and finding mysteries and adventure. The series starts with Scrooge McDuck and nephews attending an exhibition of his treasures, where he is challenged by rival billionaire John Rockerduck. Rockerduck is returning all of his treasures to their rightful owners. Never one to be outdone, Uncle Scrooge pledges to right twice as many wrongs, sending him and the nephews off on another adventure. The series is written by Warren Spector, the creator of the Epic Mickey video game, which my youngest daughter has been really enjoying, so I expect this series to be no different.

Beauty and the Squat Bears – This is the final book in this twisted fairy tale series from Yen Press. Snow White flees the kingdom when her Stepmother’s magic mirror declares her the fairest in the land. She ends up at the seven squat bears’ cabin, but then don’t want to harbor a fugitive princess. A princess should be with a prince. They set off to find one, and find the life of royalty can be quite trying, as they find prince after prince under curses and heartbroken by the woman of their dreams. One of them will need to take Snow White. Which will it be? The Squat Bears series has been a big hit with both parents and kids with its mashed-up look at fairy tales and a humorous eye that both young and old can appreciate. This series is a must for any elementary school library or young reader collection.
