Picks:
Richie Rich #1 – Another classic returns with an updated look and new adventures. Ape Entertainment brings back the classic character Richie Rich, a Harvey Comics character, and updates him for the 21st century. Richie is still rich, but is now an adventurer, who seems part James Bond Jr. and part Indiana Jones. This first issue is made up of four stories that introduces the characters and adventures Richie and his crew of Rich Rescuers will be going on. Stories include “Welcome to Rich Rescue”, “Boon Under the Bay”, and “Professor Keanbeans Gadget Corner.” Original creator Sid Jacobson also crafts a story of the original version of Richie Rich just for this debut issue. This series looks to have all the elements to attract kids, and it’s great to see a classic like this get a new life. Keep an eye out this Saturday at your local comic book shop for a free preview of the series for Free Comic Book Day.
Gladstones School For World Conquerors #1 – The children of Superheroes have had their own schools and academies. It’s time the super villains’ children had a school of their own! At Gladstone’s School for World Conquerors, a top-secret academy, the children of the world’s greatest super villains learn the trade. The story follows Kid nefarious, Mummy Girl, Martian Jones, Ghost Girl, and the infamous Skull brothers as they unearth the school’s, and their parents’, hidden past. Early reviews of this series have been good so far. This title skews toward the upper end of the scale for this list though, so middle school librarians should be the ones looking at it. You can read a preview of this issue here.
