Preview: Mickey Mouse: The Attack of the Robo-Presidents

November 20, 2010 by Brigid Alverson   Leave a Comment

The independent publisher Boom! Studios has been publishing Disney comics for a while now, and they come in all flavors, from Darkwing Duck to Uncle Scrooge to good old Mickey Mouse. Here’s the latest Mickey comic, a modern tale that doesn’t seem all that different from the comics I read as a kid; it will be out in comics shops next week.

Boom! Studios is one of the few publishers that also distributes its comics to newsstands, so you may see this in your local drugstore or bookstore. There has been a lot of discussion lately about how to connect kids and comics, especially in the wake of the cancellation of Marvel’s all-ages superhero comic Thor: The Mighty Avenger. Check out this discussion at iFanboy and my take on it at Robot 6; my conclusion is that comics shops alone aren’t a big enough market for kids’ comics, because there aren’t very many of them and most serve a predominantly adult audience. I also question (and Crogan’s March creator Chris Schweizer seconds me on this) whether single-issue comics are a good format for kids. This Mickey comic is a really lovely comic, but a $2.99 for 24 pages, a bit tough on the allowance. On the other hand, you get what you pay for, and Boom! hires some of the best young talent around.

Anyway, enjoy the comic!
