October 22, 2010 by Lori Henderson   1 comments

It’s another week of good selection of titles. Ape Entertainment continues with its licensed properties, this time with a prequel to a Dreamworks movie coming out soon. Ducks rule at Boom! Studios with Darkwing and Donald. Papercutz gets into the Halloween spirit with dragons, zombies and crypts. But the crowning jewel of this week’s list is the newest Chi’s Sweet Home from Veritcal. Even if you aren’t won over by Chi’s pure sweetness, the realistic portrayl of people and their pets will.

The Picks:

Cardcaptor Sakura Omnibus volume 1 – The classic CLAMP title for tween girls is back to charm a new generation!  Sakura Kinomoto, a fourth grader, finds a strange book in her father’s library. It was made by the wizard Clow to store dangerous spirits sealed away with in a set a magical cards. But all the cards are gone, except for the book’s guardian beast Kero-chan, who charges Sakura with the task of hunting down and capturing the spirits and return them to the book. As a shoujo series, this title will appeal most to girls, but boys can enjoy the action as well. This sits on the borderline at a 12+ rating, but the series really is suited to tween readers. Recommended for middle school libraries and up.

Dragon Puncher Book 1 – As soon as I saw the cover of this title, I knew it had to be a pick for this week. Dragon Puncher, a cute but ruthless kitty in an armored battle suit, is dedicated to defeating dangerous dragons where they may be. With his would-be sidekick Spoony-E, a fuzzy creature armed with a wooden spoon, he confronts a gigantic drooling dragon and ends up in a ridiculous, hilarious brawl. This title combines cartoon art with photographs to create a goofy and unique visual style that kids will love. It skews to the younger side of the scale, so elementary school libraries should give it a serious look, but anyone of any age with a sense of humor will enjoy this goofy backyard adventure.
