All ages comics and manga for 9/29/10
It’s the end of the month, so with not so many floppy comics coming out, graphic novels can have a chance to shine. Scholastic continues the Amazing Adventures of Nate Bank with the release of the third volume this month. Lerner’s Graphic Universe has some continuing titles as well as debut title. Batman: The Brave and Bold is on its penultimate issue this month, but with return with “The All New” added to the title. Hopefully the stories will keep their high quality. And with Halloween a month away, clock in some spooky theatrics in Archie Comics Pals and Gals Double Digest #145.

The Picks:
On The Case With Holmes and Watson Volume 1: A Scandal in Bohemia – Lerner’s Graphic Universe continues to expand with another adaptation of Sherlock Holmes. Sherlock Holmes takes on the case of finding a very important picture for the King of Bohemia, which has been hidden by the King’s former lover, Irene Adler. Donning a clever disguise, staging a brawl and faking a house fire, Holmes uses everything at his disposal to find the mysterious image. But has he met his match? This is a great Holmes story to release, as it features a woman who could match wits with the great detective, and may even have stolen his heart, as much as any woman could of the confirmed bachelor. This title also challenges the reader to figure out the facts as Holmes does, with clues in the back of the book that reveal his reasoning process and how he solves the crime.
Hereville: How Mirka Got Her Sword HC – Amulet Books introduces a new heroine for girls and tweens. Mirka Hirschberg isn’t interested in the girlish activities of knitting or getting advice on how to find a husband. This spunky, strong-willed eleven-year-old only wants to do one thing: fight dragons. Unfortunately, there aren’t any fire-breathing dragons in her Orthodox Jewish community of Hereville, but that doesn’t keep her from battle. She takes on local bullies and faces a very large, menacing pig. A challenge from a mysterious witch may fulfill her heart’s desire: finding a dragon-slaying sword. All she has to do is find and outwit the giant troll who has it. The fantasy and adventue of Hereville is appeal to tweens and teens, and the cultural traditions they may not be familiar with may interest them into finding out more.
