All ages comics and manga for 7/28/10

July 30, 2010 by Lori Henderson   Leave a Comment

If you’ve been putting off checking out DC’s Batman: The Brave and the Bold and Billy Batson and the Magic of SHAZAM, then wait no longer. DC has been cleaning house and both of these titles are being swept away, and will end before the end of year. Del Rey Manga, meanwhile, continues its kid-friendly properties with the second volume of Ben 10: Alien Force. Tween friendly manga Hikaru no Go is on countdown to ending with only 3 volumes left, while Pokemon Adventures keeps going strong. Check out the picks for some classic literature and superhero action.

The List:

The Picks:

Campfire Graphic Novels – Normally I would pick just one title from a publisher, but somehow, that just didn’t seem right this time. The Campfire line of graphic novels from Steerforth endeavours to captivate its audience just as a storyteller at a campfire does. Their releases this week come from their Classics line, which adapts literature classics Such as Robinson Crusoe and Moby Dick, as well as their own editions of oft-adapted Frankenstein and Alice in Wonderland. Kids can be resistant to reading something they consider old, but the graphic novel format seems to hold more attraction even for the reluctant reader. I would recommend middle school teachers and librarians to really look this line over.

Archie: Pureheart the Powerful vol 1 – Everyone’s had a chance to be a superhero, even veryboy Archie. In anticipation of Archie Comics reviving Pureheart the Powerful, IDW has reprinted the original six issues as well as the earlier stories that appeared in Life With Archie. Pureheart must contend with villains such as Evilheart (Reggie), and is helped by friends Captain Hero (Jughead) and Superteen (Betty). Anyone can enjoy these parody stories with their batty and bizarre villains and campy heroes. This would be a great addition to any size library.
