The Picks:
Fraggle Rock #2 – A lot was coming out when this title debuted last month. It only got a mention in the opening paragraph of the post. So I decided to give it the full treatment this month. Fraggle Rock is another creation of Jim Henson, in a more kid-friendly muppet style. This issue has the Fraggles trying to help a cat that is lost get home…in space! There’s also a backup story about how to party. With characters named Gobo, Wembley, Mokey and Boober this is definitely a title for the younger crowd. But with smart writing from the likes of Lulu Award winner Leigh Dragoon, adults can enjoy it too.
Sons of Liberty Volume 1 – This title combines American history with superhero flair to create a story full of action and historical people and events. Graham and Brody are young slaves on the run in Colonial America, until a chance encounter with the son of Ben Franklin gives them super powers. Now, they must decide if they should keep their abilities a secret, or follow their mentor’s idea, one that involves African martial art known as dambe and masks. Younger readers will enjoy the action, while older readers can also appreciate the historical aspects as the story shines a light on some of America’s darker past. Also check out this interview with the authors at Graphic Classroom.
