April 30, 2010 by Lori Henderson   Leave a Comment

It’s a whole lot of good stuff this week! Ape Entertainment has a prequel comic for the upcoming Shrek Forever movie in theaters this summer, and Archaia has the first of a four part mini series of the old favorite Fraggle Rock. Dark Horse keeps the old school comics coming with the Giant Size Little Lulu, and Marvel Comics as something old and new readers.  The third volume of their Star Comics compliations, and the return of Spider-man for under-teen readers both come out this week.  And check out the picks for some more superhero action and a fantasy favorite.

Picks:

The Last Unicorn #1 – This title straddles the borderline for the limits of this list, but I decided to include it anyway.  I made it a pick because I support graphic adaptations of novels.  This first issue of 6 begins the adaptation of Peter S. Beagle’s original novel.  The unicorn, living alone in her enchanted woods, learns that she may be the last of her kind. Afraid at first, she decides to leave the safety of her forest to find out what has happened to the other unicorns, even if it means facing the Red Bull. A favorite among fantasy fans for years, this comic adaptation is ready to introduce the series to a whole new generation of fantasy fans, and is most appropriate for middle schoolers and up.

Amazing Adventures of Nate Banks Volume 1: Secret Identity Crisis – Scholastic Books  introduces a new graphic novel series with a hero, Nate Banks, with a power a lot of kids can relate to; the knowledge of comic book superheros! In this first volume, Nate’s knowledge is put to the test when a mysterious new superhero shows up in town. He sets out to find out the secret identity of this new superhero, can he believe where the clues lead him? This title sounds like a lot of fun, with a lead kids can really relate to.  Elementary and middle school kids will get the biggest kick out of this title.
