All ages comics and manga for 3/3/10

March 5, 2010 by Lori Henderson   Leave a Comment

Even all ages titles aren’t immune to current events!  Over in Veronica #199, Veronica meets President Obama and takes his call to find more jobs for Americans to heart, starting with Archie and Betty.  Tired of hearing about the healthcare bill?  Then check out Looney Tunes #184 from DC Comics for some real medical quackery with Daffy and Porky.  And for the month of March, in honor of Women’s History Month, I will be featuring at least one title where girls, women, and/or females are prominent in the story.  Both picks fit technically, but one is definitely more for girls than the other.

Picks:

Guinea Pig Pet Shop Private Eye Vol 1: Hamster & Cheese – This is a new series from Graphic Universe.  Someone has been stealing the cheese from Mr. Venezi’s sandwichs, and everyone in his pet shop is a suspect, especially Hamisher, the hamster.  To prove his innocence, he asks for help from the book-loving guinea pig, Sassypants.  But she only wants to be left alone to read her books, and the only way to do this is to solve the crime.  Animals and mysteries are always big hits with kids, and this title combines them in a fun and appealing way.

Swan Vol 15 – I start Women’s History month with a classic manga series. Swan follows Masumi and her dreams to become a ballerina.  But it’s not all fun and games, there’s a lot of work involved with becoming a great dancer.  In this latest volume, Leonhardt decides to quit rather than dance with anyone but Masumi. A rival choreographer takes advantage of this to get the couple to perform for him instead, and Masumi has another would be suitor in Lucien.  This series filled with romance, melodrama and lots of dancing.  Masumi is a great role model for girls with a dream and the determination to make it come true.
