Links: The myth of All Ages

November 24, 2009 by Brigid Alverson   Leave a Comment

Graphic Novel Reporter asked librarians and others for their recommendations for the Best Graphic Novel of 2009. Lots of good suggestions here!

The Georgetown Record has a nice interview with Cap’n Eli creator Jay Piscopo. (Via All Ages Graphic Novels.)

Kiel Phegley talks to Eric Powell, creator of The Goon, about his new project, a kid-friendly comic.

Just in time for the holidays, here’s a lively internet discussion to read on your day off: Christopher Butcher takes retailers to task for their attitudes toward all ages comics, starting with the notion that there is any such thing; "all ages" is a myth, Chris says, and people should not be ashamed of creating or selling comics that are aimed at kids. There’s lots more at the link, all of it good. Our own Scott Robins is quoted in the article and jumps in in the comments section. Heidi MacDonald and Noah Berlatsky have excellent, thoughtful responses. Meanwhile, retailer Mary Alice Wilson wonders why comics publishers can’t figure out what other publishers already know: If kids like a book, churn out more in the same vein.

Chris Mautner talks to Larry Gonick about the end of his graphic novel series The Cartoon History of the Universe.

Just for fun: A Usagi Yojimbo hidden-picture puzzle!

And don’t forget to enter our contest to win a three-volume set of the Color of Earth trilogy!

Reviews:
Today’s must-read review is Chris Sims’ hilarious takedown of Bluewater’s Stephenie Meyer bio-comic.
