All ages comics and manga for 10/7/09

October 10, 2009 by Lori Henderson   Leave a Comment

And we’re back!  It’s a good week of offerings, with Boom! Studios starting another Incredibles series, this one written by Mark Waid and illustrated by Matt Wagner!  (Ask your local comic geek why they are a big deal.) Doctor Who Classics continues with it’s adaptation of the 5th Doctor’s stories, which start to move up to the 10-12 age range, but still with strong stories.  Udon brings out the second volume of Fairy Idol Kanon, and Viz has a whole pile of manga for young to tween readers.

Picks:

X-Babies #1 – Remember in the late 80’s and early 90’s, when creating a spinoff of a popular series, but babized was popular?  We got things like Muppet Babies, Baby Looney Toons and X-Babies.  The X-babies are little kid versions of the X-men, but not quite like Super Hero Squad.  They are kids with attitudes.  The X-babies are the top rated stars on Mojoworld, but they’ve been replaced by something cuter, safer, and friendlier.  Not that they’re are just going to stand around take it.  This is a title that can be cute and snarky at the same time, appealing to tween and young teen readers.

Legend of Zelda vol 7: Four Swords Part 2 – Legend of Zelda has been around for about 2 decades now, starting out on Nintendo’s original NES game system.  So, there have been a lot of stories told about Link and the Princess Zelda.  Viz has been publishing the manga series that is based on these games. Though the series has been number consecutively, each storyline can be taken as a single series. This volume is the second of the Four Swords story, where Link has been split into four different Links by the Four Sword, and none of them want to get along.  But to save Zelda, and stop the evil from Dark World, they must find a way to become one again and control the power of the Four Sword. The art for this series is rather cartoony and the story is just right for tweens, filled with fun and action.
