All ages comics and manga for 6/3/09

June 4, 2009 by Lori Henderson   Leave a Comment

It’s another good week for kid’s comics.  Boom! Studios has done a second printing of their Incredibles #1, just in case you missed out the first time.  Drawn & Quarterly releases volume 4 of Moomin Complete in hardback, and First Second’s Tiny Tyrant makes it to the direct market this week.  And for the young ones, IDW’s Worthwhile Press has a couple of title just for them.  Manga makes a good showing this week, with Seven Seas releasing their first volume based on the Avalon: Web of Magic series, and Viz lets loose with Pokemon, Legend of Zelda and the final volume of Dragon Drive.

Picks:

Avalon: Warlock Diaries vol 1 – This is an adaptation of the book series Avalon: Web of Magic.  The story is  brand new, written by Rachel Roberts, the novel’s writer and art by Seven Seas artists Edward Gan and Shiei.  Teenage mages Emily, Kara, and Adriane monitor the portal at the Ravenswood Preserve, but the arrival of transfer student/Warlock Donovan brings trouble.  Monsters start attacking, looking for him, for he has a fairy map that leads to Avalon, the source of all magic.  Fans of the Avalon series will definitely want this series, as will fans of fantasy and magic.  I wanted a copy too, but my Diamond Previews order of it was cancelled.  I’ll have to get it somewhere else.

Pokemon Adventures TP Vol 1 – Early in this decade, Viz was releasing Pokemon  manga as magazine-sized comics.  When they stopped, they became difficult to find and expensive.  But with the push for more all ages manga, they’ve dusted off the comics and are now re-releasing them as graphic novels.  We start off following Red.  He’s a pokemon trainer who also wants to be friends with his pokemon.  Poliwhirl and Bulbasaur are game, but independent Pikachu will need more convincing.  The Best of’s that Viz releases a few years back gave Pokemon lovers a taste of this series, and now they can finally read the whole thing!
