Linkfest: January interviews and reviews

January 17, 2009 by Brigid Alverson   Leave a Comment

It has been a little while since we’ve done a link post, so here’s a roundup of recent articles.

Maeve Clougherty has an interesting interview with Skim writer Mariko Tamaki at the McGill Daily. (Via Journalista.)

Also found via Journalista, this list of 25 essential kid-friendly graphic novels, by USA Today blogger Whitney Matheson, is almost a year old, but it is interesting as both a list of (mostly) worthwhile books and a reminder of how far the field has come in a year; the list could probably be doubled today.

Lia Granger interviews Shaun Tan, author of The Arrival and Tales from Outer Suburbia, for The Walrus.

While comics retailer Christopher Butcher is actually making a different (and rather interesting) point in this post at Comics212, the thing that jumped out at me was that we can expect to see more from American Born Chinese creator Gene Yang in the coming year.

The New York Times notices the popularity of The Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and USA Today talks to creator Jeff Kinney about how he balances work and life.

James Kochalka talks to Jennifer Contino about his kids’ comic, Johnny Boo.

Tania Del Rio reflects on the end of Sabrina, the Teenage Witch.

Newsarama interviews Scott Morse about his new book, Tiger! Tiger! Tiger!

Tintin turned 80 recently, and The Economist writes the big story. JL Bell reacts at Oz and Ends, and the Copenhagen Post looks at one of Herge’s inspirations for his comic.

Laura Hudson has a nice piece on comics in the classroom in Publishers Weekly Comics Week.

Here’s a vintage treat: Golden Age Comic Book Stories posts part of a 1937 Walt Disney Annual.
