Picks:
Wonderful Wizard of Oz #1 – Baum’s classic childrens novel is the newest edition to the Marvel Illustrated line of classic literature. The story of Dorothy, Toto, and the rest of gang’s adventures on the yellow brick road has been faithfully adapted by Eric Shanower and drawn by Skottie Young. There are no new twists to the story, as all of the Marvel Illustrated adapations. The art, however, has a unique appeal. It’s a style that both young and old readers can enjoy, and has a bit of a nostalgic feel to it. Marvel released a sketchbook as a preview for the series, which can be seen here.
Courtney Crumrin and Prince of Nowhere – Created by Ted Naifeh and published by Onipress, this book is the second of two of one-shots. Courtney is a pre-teen curmudgeon who has discovered the world of dark magic through her Uncle Aloysius, who she and her social climbing parents live with. Taking more after her Uncle than parents, Courtney begins her journey into this magical world. In this one-shot, Courtney and her Uncle are continuing their European vacation. There are issues between Courtney and her Uncle that must be sorted out and Old World monsters to face. This book has a fantasy-horror feel to it, and the art is simple but fitting. This is another true all ages title that both young and old can enjoy.
