All ages comics and manga list for 12/04/08

December 4, 2008 by Lori Henderson   Leave a Comment

Tis the season to spend money, and what better thing to spend it on than comics?  This week’s list features the second arc of Antarctic Press’ Land of Oz, as well as the product of Del Rey’s alliance with Cartoon Network.  This is a semi-OEL title based on the cartoon and game property Bakugan.  It’s basically scenes from the cartoon, so don’t expect a lot.  The second volume of Doctor Who Classics is out, so you can give a deserving kid the whole first run!  Or if need help getting into the Christmas mood, there is Walt Disney’s Christmas Parade to march you to the mall.

Picks:

The War at Ellsmere – Created by Zombie Calling creator Faith Erin Hicks, this is new title of rivalry and legend in a private school.  Jun is a new scholarship student at the prestigious Ellsmere boarding school for girls.  To most of the priviledged, rich girls this means charity case, and a target, but Jun isn’t one to give in so quickly.  A rocky first meeting soon escalates into a rivalry between Jun, and the school’s queen bee Emily.  And what is behind the school legend of a mythical beast that roams the forest outside the school?  This book seems to have lots of drama with a touch of fantasy woven in.  The art is in a manga-ish style, similar to the Scott Pilgram books.  Another good title for girls to look at.

Supergirl: Cosmic Adventures in the 8th Grade #1 – DC is at it again, trying to lure girls into reading comics.  But this time, they might actually be doing it right. Supergirl is getting a makeover through the Johnny DC line by Landry Walker and Eric Jones of Little Gloomy and Super Scary Monster Show fame.  Supergirl, aka Linda Lee, is newly arrived on Earth, with not only new superpowers to deal with, but also being in the eighth grade.  The stories will seem to be a combination of school drama and cosmic heroing.  The art is an American animation style, fitting in well with the rest of the Johnny DC line.  A five page preview of the first issue is included in the above link.  This looks to be a very promising book for both girls and superhero fans.
