All ages comics and manga for 11/12/08

November 13, 2008 by Lori Henderson   Leave a Comment

The beginning of November marks the end of a couple of titles.  We say goodbye to N-Guard and Avengers Fairy Tales.  This was Marvel’s third take on fairy tales in their universe, and I hope they find ways to continue.  The stories reached beyond the European tales and into other cultures, making the stories both new and familiar at the same time.  Around the blogosphere, there is anticipation for Salt Water Taffy volume 2 from Oni Press.  There’s also a new Nancy Drew, a title I have to always point out just because they are so well done and would go perfectly in any library.

Picks:

Archie & Friends #125 – I’m a believer of comics getting recognition when they hit certain milestones, and 125 is one of those numbers!  Archie is commemorating getting this far by featuring a story by Jane Smith Fisher, a long time advocate and writer of children’s comics.  This issue finishes the storyline "Battle of the Bands" started last issue.  The Archies have won, but only have their travel expenses will be covered by the prize money, so the kids will have to get jobs to cover the rest, except Reggie and Veronica, of course.  The value of work ethics is the underlying theme in this story, something you’re never too old to learn.

Speed Racer Next Generation: Birthright #1 – This mini-series is based on the new cartoon that premiered earlier this year on Nick Toons.  The cartoon was partially made to promote the movie, but the comic and series actually takes place in the future with the next generation of racers.  Speed Senior as disappeared.  His kids, Speed Jr. and X, now attend the Spritle’s Racing Academy and discover the plans for the Mach 6, with it’s gassless engine.  Along with their friends, Speed Jr. and X are trying to solve the mystery of their father’s disappearance, complete the Mach 6, and stick it to the evil oil corporations that want to stop them.  It’s got an environmental message as well as plenty of action and cars.
